Bridging Now to Next: Honouring National Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week

Honouring National Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week at Granville Boys High School.

In recognition of National Sorry Day (Monday, 26 May), and to commence the start of Reconciliation Week (27 May to 3 June), Granville Boys High School held an assembly on Tuesday, 27 May.

The assembly was a reminder to our students why we pay respects to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and also an opportunity to increase our awareness and understanding of the Stolen Generations and the ongoing impact of historic government policies that caused profound harm to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The assembly featured informative presentations about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (Indigenous) language, the history of the Australian Aboriginal flag, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders’ fundamental freedom rights, the history of the Burramattagal people, who lived and thrived in the natural environment of the Parramatta River and Duck Creek. Students also heard about sporting greats and leaders such as professional rugby league footballer Latrell Mitchell and Australian professional basketball player for the Los Angeles Clippers, Patty Mills.

This year’s theme for National Reconciliation Week, ‘Bridging Now to Next’, invites us to acknowledge past wrongs, to reconcile the past with the present, and walk together towards a more respectful and inclusive future.
