Human Society and its Environment

The exploration of Human Society and its Environment (HSIE) involves examining the dynamics of human interactions with the world, understanding the functioning of society, and observing its evolving nature. By engaging with HSIE, students cultivate the skills necessary to engage as informed and responsible citizens in the present-day global context.

In HSIE, both subjects of History and Geography are mandatory from Year 7 to Year 10.

Year 7 to Year 10 (Stage 4 and Stage 5)

  • Geography: students develop an understanding of the interactions between people, places and environments across a range of scales.
  • History: students explore the past, to critically understand its impact on the present, to develop the critical skills of historical inquiry.

They also have an opportunity to learn more about people and the societies and environments in which they live through elective subjects in Years 9 to 12 (Stage 5 to Stage 6).

A large number of individual subjects make up the key learning area of HSIE in which students:

  • research, gather and analyse information
  • question and make judgements
  • write for a variety of purposes.

In Year 11 and 12 (Stage 6)

Students can choose from a range of HSIE subjects. These include:

  • Ancient History
  • Business Studies
  • Economics
  • Geography
  • History Extension
  • Legal Studies
  • Modern History
  • Society and Culture
  • Studies of Religion.
