Year 11 and 12

The range of subjects in Year 11 and 12 are:

  • Visual Arts
  • Music

Students will learn performing, composing, researching and listening to a wide variety of different types of music including music of the students' choice.

Course topics

Three topics are chosen from the list below in Year 11 and in Year 12 which cover a range of styles, periods and genres:

  • Methods of notating music
  • Music and religion
  • Music and the related arts
  • Music for large ensembles
  • Music for radio, film, television and multimedia
  • Music for small ensembles
  • Music in education
  • Music of a culture (Preliminary course)
  • Music of a culture (HSC course)
  • Music of the 18th century
  • Music of the 19th century
  • Music of the 20th and 21st centuries
  • Popular music
  • Renaissance music
  • Rock music
  • Technology and its influence on music
  • Theatre music

Year 11 (preliminary)

Assessment

The Year 11 formal school-based assessment program is to reflect the following components, weightings, and requirements.

Year 12 (HSC)

Assessment

The Year 12 formal school-based assessment program is to reflect the following components, weightings, and requirements.

Electives 45%

HSC exam

  • core performance (one piece) - 10%.
  • 45 minute to one hour aural exam - 30%
  • three electives from any combination of:
    • performance (one piece) - 20%
    • composition (and submitted composition) - 20%
    • musicology (one viva voce) - 20%.

Students learn to study images and objects, experiment with ideas and techniques and create artworks through a number of mediums such as painting, sculpting, printmaking, collage and photography.

Year 11 (preliminary)

Topics

Preliminary course learning opportunities focus on:

  • investigations in the practice of art making, art criticism and art history
  • the role and function of artists, the world, artwork and audiences in the world of art
  • ‘The Frames' and informed points of view
  • develop meaning, focus and interest in artmaking.
  • building skills and understandings with different forms and materials.

Assessment

  • artworks in at least two forms and visual arts process diary
  • a broad investigation of ideas in art criticism and art history.

Year 12 (HSC)

Topics

  • informed points of view in using ‘The Frames'
  • develop practice of artmaking and art history in selected areas of interest
  • relationships between artist, artwork, world and audience within the art world
  • developing meaning and focus in artmaking.

Assessment

  • a body of work in one or more forms and visual arts process diary
  • a broad investigation of ideas in art criticism and art history.

HSC exam

  • a written paper - 50%
  • submission of a body of work - 50%.
